Anonymous asked: Good morning,

I'm getting started on a column for the Wall Street Journal's metro section about bikes for everyday cycling here in NYC. It’s going to include some material on the Dutch bikes and the stores that sell them. Since you’ve devoted your blog to slow biking culture, I'm curious to get your take on buying one of these bikes vs., say, an old Schwinn? And are there good shopping options beyond the high-end stores that specialize in these bikes? Please let me know if I can give you a ring.

Thanks,

anne, hi. three of my family’s 4 dutch bikes were purchased used and for more than 50% off of what you would pay for in the store. now that i feel my house if sufficiently full, i would love to tell the world my secret. email me at noel@noneck.org and lets find a good time to chat.

Last year, @BicyclesOnly and I did a cyclechic ride. He got all dressed up and I rolled in with a bowling shirt… shoot me, i’m a fracking hipster… This year, @Amsterdamize is crossing the pond and we’re teaming up w/ @NyCycleChic to do an “UN-#5boro” ride! We really don’t care what you wear, as long as you dress to impress & it’s no-lycra.

a sensible Borough President would see which way the wind is blowing and would decide, you know what? I’m going to brag about the fact that Brooklyn is one of the best places in the entire United States of America you can come and live if you want to be able to get around by bike. If Marty lived with us here in the 21st century rather than being stuck in 1958, he would be taking credit for NYC DOT’s innovations and improvements. He’d be bouncing around shouting, “Come to Brooklyn. You can ride…

Whats not surprising is that there was a collision on the bike path—though deceptively safe, that bike path is often packed with cyclists who ride even more recklessly because theyre not pedaling through traffic. Take it easy, people!

here’s two great posts from the bicyclette blog. i just love the last paragraph…

She’s so hot she’s making me a sexist. Bitch (NSFW)

I ride my bike everyday. I know the difference between a cruiser with a coaster break and a fixie. I call it a saddle, not a seat. I am no mechanic, but I can change a tire and fix a flat. Just because I ride in a dress and I like pink bikes, does not mean I am any less of a cyclist than, let’s say, these dudes.

However, plenty of male cyclists,…

While it is the LAST weekend of summer and we’ll all be battling hurricane earl, Adeline Adeline is having their first sample sale! If you’re not on their email list, you should. I’ve been told that you’ll see further sales will be posted on the mailing list and on @AdelineNYC‘s twitter account.

Since this is an “in-store” sample sale, you won’t be seeing too many of these items around their website. Check out this laundry list of great goods! I’ve bolded a few of the really…

This weekend on Governors Island, Julie, owner of Adeline Adeline (aka @adelineNYC), and her family ran across another bakfiet. Then @noneck ran across @naparstek and his bakfiet. If this invasion is true, we couldn’t be happier!!!

It's not a tour of #bikenyc w/out running into @Naparstek on his #dutchSUV bakfiet. W/ @stevevance & Tony

Governors Island is a small island located off of the tip of Manhattan. It’s one of those places where you go to get away from it all and this Saturday, that’s exactly what we will do. Once on the island, we will picnic and lawn game till our hearts burst with couchsurfing love.

We’ll be joined by Couchsurfers who are attending CouchCrash 2010 and NYC area cyclists who use twitter and other forms of social media to connect with each other. If you’re on Twitter search for…
